What it is

A pharmacy, not a supplement aisle.

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest continuously practiced systems of medicine in the world, a body of clinical knowledge refined over more than two thousand years and still in active use today. Most of what is sold as “herbal medicine” is a single herb in a capsule, marketed for a single symptom. What we practice is something else entirely. A formula is a deliberately balanced combination of many herbs, compounded for your case, your constitution, and the current state of your condition, then adjusted as you change.

The practice on Sunset Drive keeps a fully stocked pharmacy of both patent remedies, pre-made pills based on time-tested classical formulas, and raw herb powders that can be combined into a prescription written specifically for you. Which one you receive depends on your case and your preference; both are clinically effective. Your formula is chosen the same way the rest of your treatment is, from a thorough intake, your pulse, and your tongue, so it addresses the underlying pattern rather than chasing the symptom on the surface.

Herbal medicine is rarely used in isolation. It extends your acupuncture between visits, doing quiet, daily work on digestion, sleep, hormones, or immunity on the days you are not on the table. For many chronic and hormonal patterns, it is the part of the plan that makes the result hold.

This is one thread of our Silver Lake acupuncture practice, chosen for your pattern rather than offered as a standalone menu item.

How it works

The mechanism, broken down.

Three things have to be right for a formula to work, the diagnosis behind it, the formulation itself, and the quality of what goes into it.

01

Pattern diagnosis

Pulse and tongue diagnosis plus a thorough intake identify your underlying pattern, not just the symptom. This is what determines which formula is prescribed and how it is adjusted over time.

02

Custom formulation

A combination of patent (pill) remedies and raw herb powders, weighted to your case. Sometimes a classical formula used as written, sometimes a bespoke combination built for the way your pattern actually presents.

03

Tested at the source

Every herb comes from manufacturers who follow Good Agricultural Practices and pass rigorous testing for pesticides, heavy metals, and contaminants, so what you take is both effective and clean.

Conditions treated

Common reasons patients use it.

Herbal formulas are most useful for patterns that play out over time, digestion, hormones, sleep, immunity, where steady daily support between acupuncture visits changes the trajectory.

Benefits

What you can expect from it.

What a well-built formula adds to a course of care.

Works between your visits

Acupuncture happens on the table; herbs keep the work going every day in between, which is often what turns a temporary shift into a lasting one.

Built for your pattern

Two people with the same diagnosis rarely receive the same formula. Yours is weighted to your constitution and adjusted as your case evolves, not pulled off a shelf.

Screened and source-tested

Every herb is tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and contaminants, and every formula is screened against your current medications and supplements before it’s prescribed.

Gentle, gradual, sustainable

Formulas are prescribed in short courses and reassessed as you change, so you take what you need for as long as you need it, and no longer.

Who is a candidate

Is this right for you?

Herbal medicine fits some situations better than others. A first consultation is the honest way to know, but here is the general picture.

A good fit if…

  • You have a chronic or recurring pattern, digestive, hormonal, sleep, or immune, that you’d like to support daily, not just weekly
  • You’re preparing for conception or supporting an IVF / IUI cycle and want coordinated, cycle-aware care
  • You want to extend and hold the results of your acupuncture between visits
  • You’ve plateaued on symptom-only approaches and want to address the underlying pattern
  • You’re comfortable taking a prescribed formula consistently for a few weeks at a time
!

Not the right tool if…

  • You’re looking for a single “miracle” supplement rather than a tailored, evolving formula
  • You’re pregnant or nursing and haven’t yet been evaluated, some herbs need careful selection
  • You aren’t able to take a formula reliably as prescribed
  • Your situation calls for urgent or emergency medical care, herbs are not a substitute for it

Every formula is screened for interactions with your current medications and supplements. If you’re working with another physician, especially a reproductive endocrinologist, we coordinate directly with their protocol before anything is prescribed.

Frequently asked

Practical questions.

We screen every formula for interactions with your current medications. If you’re working with another physician, especially a reproductive endocrinologist, we coordinate directly with their protocol.
Most formulas are prescribed for 1–4 weeks at a time, then reassessed. As your pattern shifts, the formula shifts. Long-term maintenance formulas exist but are rare.
Raw herbs can be bitter. Patent pills are taste-neutral. We choose the format based on your preference and your case, both are clinically effective.
No. Herbal medicine is paid out of pocket. HSA and FSA cards are typically accepted.
