Acupuncture for period pain in Los Angeles treats cramps, heavy bleeding, and irregular cycles. Most patients notice a difference within two to three cycles.

Why patients choose us

We treat what is causing the pain.

Painful periods are common, and most patients have been told to take ibuprofen and wait it out. We look at your cycle, your symptoms, and your history to find the pattern behind the pain, then treat that. Acupuncture is recognized by the NIH’s NCCIH, and we practice from our Silver Lake clinic, minutes from Northeast LA.

  • 20+ years treating menstrual conditions, in practice since 2005.
  • FABORM board fellow, an advanced credential in reproductive medicine.
  • Cycle-timed treatment, sessions planned around where you are in your cycle.
  • Herbal medicine when appropriate, prescribed alongside your treatments to support them between visits.
  • Coordinated with your physician, we keep your doctor in the loop and work with whatever they have you on.
  • One practitioner, every visit, never rotated between providers.
How it works

Three ways treatment reduces period pain.

Menstrual cramps come from uterine contractions driven by prostaglandins. Acupuncture works on the mechanisms behind those contractions.

Acupuncture points used to reduce menstrual cramping
01

Reduces prostaglandin activity

Lower prostaglandin levels mean weaker uterine contractions and less cramping.

02

Improves pelvic blood flow

Better circulation to the uterus reduces the ischemic pain that comes with strong contractions.

03

Calms the stress response

Cortisol amplifies pain perception and disrupts cycle regularity. Treatment lowers both.

Systematic reviews have found acupuncture reduces menstrual pain severity, in several trials performing comparably to NSAIDs with fewer side effects. The research is promising, though still limited. Any practitioner promising a specific result is overstating what the evidence supports.

Know the difference

When cramps mean something more.

Severe or worsening cramps sometimes point to an underlying condition. If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth looking into.

  • Pain that stops you functioning for a day or more
  • Cramping that has intensified over recent years
  • Pain outside your period, or during intercourse
  • Heavy bleeding, clotting, or cycles that keep shifting

These patterns are associated with endometriosis, fibroids, and PCOS. We will tell you what we are seeing and when it is worth getting imaging or bloodwork, and we treat the pain either way.

Straight answers

Questions about treating period pain.

How many sessions before my periods improve?
Most patients notice a difference within two to three cycles. Treatment is timed to your cycle, so each month builds on the last.
When in my cycle should I come in?
Ideally we start in the week before your period, when treatment has the most influence on the coming cycle. If you are in pain now, come in now, and we will plan the schedule from there.
Can I get acupuncture during my period?
Yes. Treatment during menstruation is often the most direct relief for acute cramping, and point selection is adjusted for where you are in your cycle.
Does it hurt? I do not like needles.
The needles are roughly the width of a hair. Most patients feel light pressure or warmth, and many fall asleep during treatment. If needle anxiety is what has kept you from trying this, say so and we will go slowly.
What does it cost?
A first visit is 90 minutes at $295, including full intake and treatment. Follow-ups are 30 to 50 minutes at $150. No packages, you pay per visit and know the cost before booking.
Do you take insurance?
We are out-of-network with most insurers. We provide a superbill for reimbursement, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
Will this interfere with birth control or pain medication?
No. Acupuncture works alongside both. If you are taking herbal medicine we review it for interactions, and we coordinate with your physician.
What if my pain turns out to be endometriosis or fibroids?
Then you have an answer, which is better than another year of guessing. Acupuncture supports pain and cycle regulation alongside whatever treatment your physician recommends. Read more about acupuncture for endometriosis.
Ready to begin?

You do not have to plan your month around your period.

New-patient visits are 90 minutes, a full intake followed by your first treatment. Same-week appointments are often available.
