If you ask my husband, he would say I keep too much. But I believe in a well-stocked home pharmacy — it means I do not have to run to the store when someone is feeling sick or run-down.
During my own postpartum and nursing journeys, I relied heavily on natural alternatives, since many standard cold and flu medications can negatively impact milk supply. Please note that while these are my personal household favorites, you should always consult a practitioner before starting any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant or nursing.
The staples
- Wellness Formula (Source Naturals) — Taken at the very first sign of a cold, it can really nip it in the bud. I have used it in tailored, smaller doses while nursing. For patients who are not pregnant or actively trying to conceive, following the maximum acute dose instructions is highly effective for knocking out an oncoming bug.
- Ester-C — A pH-neutral form of Vitamin C manufactured via a water-based process. Because it is not acidic, it is incredibly gentle on the stomach compared to traditional ascorbic acid. A fantastic vitamin to add the moment you feel run-down.
- Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) — A potent natural defense against environmental bugs. I keep both liquid and tablets. The tablets are much easier to take — the pure liquid is intensely bitter. The liquid, however, makes an excellent addition to a warm water gargle for a sore throat, or diluted to naturally sanitize household surfaces.
- Kids' Sniffle Support (Gaia Herbs) — An absolute lifesaver for children's congestion and minor throat irritation. Alcohol-free, gentle herbs like elderberry and thyme. Whenever my own children needed it, it cleared up congestion so quickly I rarely needed it for more than a day or two.
- Ginger tea — I always keep fresh ginger root and organic ginger tea bags on hand. Nothing better during seasonal shifts. I avoid it if a high fever or acute sore throat is present (ginger is warming), but for general chills, nausea, or feeling run-down, a hot cup with local honey is unmatched.
- Arnica Montana — Both homeopathic tablets and topical cream or gel. Unmatched for minor bumps, bruises, sports injuries, or post-injection swelling. I use the fast-absorbing topical gel when I need it to stay clean, and a rich ointment for deep muscle aches.
- Rescue Remedy — A classic Bach Flower Remedy for acute moments of stress, overwhelming anxiety, or sudden shock. I keep the pastilles in my bag. Completely safe and gentle — I have even used a drop or two to calm our family pets during fireworks or post-vet recoveries.
For more targeted support — especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a chronic condition — a customized herbal formula from our on-site pharmacy will always serve you better than off-the-shelf supplements.
